Exploring Vietnam for the Over-60s on a Budget

As a local, I’ve seen how Vietnam has become a favorite destination for tourists over 60, offering an affordable yet rich experience.

Dreaming of an exotic, budget-friendly trip? Let me guide you through Vietnam’s vibrant landscapes and cultural richness.

From economical accommodation and transportation to affordable dining and attractions, especially for Western visitors, Vietnam stands out.

In this article, I’ll share insights on how to enjoy comfortable stays, easy travel, delightful cuisine, and captivating tourist spots in Vietnam, all while keeping your expenses in check.

1. Navigating Transport Costs to Vietnam

For anyone planning a trip to Vietnam, especially those mindful of their budget, international transport is often the most significant expense. Finding the most cost-effective flights requires strategic planning.

Based on insights from my earlier article (The Best Times To Book The Cheapest Flights to Vietnam):

The best months to book a flight to Vietnam are March, April, and May. These months offer a sweet spot with lower flight prices and pleasant weather, just before the summer rush.

During this period, airlines are keen to fill seats, leading to discounts ranging from 5% to 50% compared to peak season rates. For example, a flight costing about $800 in June can reduce to around $450 in April, or even $400 in May.

It’s wise to avoid June and July when prices soar due to high demand. And pay attention to the following key tips:

  1. Book 2-3 months ahead to secure the best flight rates. Watch out for Vietnamese holidays like Tet or Reunification Day, when prices rise sharply.
  2. Also, consider various airlines and stopover flights, which can be more economical than direct ones.

2. How to Move within Vietnam: Cost-Effective Methods

First, I strongly recommend downloading the Grab app, Vietnam’s equivalent to Uber. In Vietnam, Grab also offers motorbike rides with drivers, a popular and affordable mode of transport here. It’s known for its transparency and straightforward pricing.

Travel from the Airport

  • Grab Car: From the airport to your accommodation, especially with luggage, opt for a Grab car. Rates typically range from 13,000 VND (about $0.53) to 16,000 VND ($0.65) per kilometer.
  • Caution with Other Taxis: Be wary of non-Grab taxi services at the airport. Prices shouldn’t be significantly higher than Grab’s rates. Particularly at Ho Chi Minh City’s airport, be cautious and avoid responding to soliciting motorbike drivers.

Attention:

Starting your travel journey from Noi Bai Airport is a strategic choice, as it provides convenient, inexpensive, and straightforward transportation solutions, making it an ideal gateway for exploring the northern regions of Vietnam.

When you arrive in Vietnam via Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi and intend to head directly to destinations like Ninh Binh, rather than staying in Hanoi first, it’s important to be mindful of your transportation choices.

While taking a direct taxi to Ninh Binh, which is about 131 km away, might seem convenient, it can be quite expensive, costing around 1,600,000 VND (about $65).

A more budget-friendly alternative is to use high-quality limousine services directly from Noi Bai Airport, which offer a comfortable journey to Ninh Binh for only about 340,000 VND ($14).

These services provide convenient transportation from the airport directly to your accommodation in popular tourist areas and back.

This is particularly important to consider if you’re traveling independently without the assistance of travel services.

Personal Transportation in Cities

In this section, we delve into three popular ways to get around in Vietnam – motorbikes, cars, and buses – and provide tips for traveling conveniently while keeping your budget in check.

  • Motorbike (Recommended for a quieter, scenic experience)

For an intimate experience of local streets and scenery, hiring a motorbike with a driver is a great option.

Available through Grab apps or travel services, this mode of transport is both affordable and convenient, typically costing around 5,000 VND to 7,000 VND ($0.2 to $0.3) per kilometer.

It’s particularly ideal in quieter, scenic areas like Hue, Ninh Binh, and Quang Binh, where the environment is safer and more relaxed compared to crowded cities.

  • Car (Recommended for Big Cities)

However, for Western tourists over 60, I recommend caution when considering motorbikes in bustling cities like Hanoi and Saigon. Navigating these busy streets can pose safety challenges.

Instead, in these larger cities, it’s safer and more comfortable to opt for car services such as Grab or Vinasun. The rates for these services are reasonable, generally ranging from 13,000 VND ($0.53) to 16,000 VND ($0.65) per kilometer.

Taxi

  • Buses

While buses are a common mode of transport in big cities, they may not be the most convenient choice for foreign tourists, especially in smaller towns where language barriers are more likely, as most bus staff do not speak English.

Despite the incredibly cheap fares, about 7,000 VND ($0.3) for a long trip, if you’re considering buses for your travel, thorough planning of your route is essential, particularly in terms of departure and destination points.

Tips for Affordable and Enjoyable Transportation in Tourist Areas

In the serene tourist spots of Vietnam, such as Hue, Hoi An, Ninh Binh, or Quang Binh, renting motorbikes or bicycles is a favored option among foreign tourists. These areas offer a slower pace of life and less traffic, ideal for leisurely exploration.

  • Motorbike Rentals: Typically priced at around 150,000 VND ($6.13) per day, motorbikes are a cost-effective way to travel. With an additional 50,000 VND to 80,000 VND ($2 to $3) for gasoline, you can comfortably explore for two days, offering a more affordable and flexible experience than app-based driver services.
  • Bicycle Rentals: At about 50,000 VND ($2.1) per day, bicycles are a great way to immerse in the authentic Vietnamese countryside without overspending. (For some local hotels and homestays, they may even let you borrow a bicycle for free)

This approach is not only economical but also a fantastic way to connect with fellow travelers, including many over the age of 60, who often prefer these modes of transportation in rural tourist areas.

3. Affordable Accommodation in Vietnam

As a Vietnamese local, I can assure international tourists from the US or Europe that finding affordable hotels in Vietnam is surprisingly easy, particularly during low seasons.

In off-peak times, you only need about 450,000 VND to 700,000 VND ($20 to $30) per night for a decent place to stay.

From my experience, a 3-star hotel in Vietnam, costing between 450,000 VND to 700,000 VND ($20 to $30), will offer you a clean, modern room with all the necessary amenities, especially suitable for those over 60.

For something closer to the heart of our culture, and around 450,000 VND ($20), you can opt for an authentic homestay or local neighborhoods. You’ll get to know friendly locals and delve deeper into Vietnamese life.

I recommend using apps like Agoda to book your stay. Look for accommodations with high ratings (from 8.5 to 9+ stars) to ensure a pleasant experience.

If your budget is tight, you might want to skip the $80 to $150 per night resorts or bungalows. Instead, use that money to savor the rich variety of Vietnamese cuisine.

With these tips, you can enjoy a comfortable stay in Vietnam and still have the funds to explore the myriad of culinary delights my country offers.

4. Your Daily Menu in Vietnam: A Culinary Adventure

Vietnam is a culinary paradise, boasting a diverse array of local dishes. Once you’ve sorted out your transportation and accommodation, food expenses are quite manageable.

To enjoy authentic Vietnamese cuisine at an affordable price, local eateries and street food stalls are your best bet.

Typical dishes like Pho, Bun Bo, and Hu Tieu are priced around 35,000 VND to 50,000 VND ($1.5 to $2.1). For larger portions, you might pay up to 80,000 VND ($3.3).

Street food favorites like Banh Mi or fruit juices will cost you about 15,000 VND to 40,000 VND ($0.7 to $1.6).

Pho, Banh xeo and Banh Mi

The famous tourist spots in Vietnam now feature more foreign tourist-friendly Vietnamese restaurants. Here, prices are a bit higher, around 100,000 VND ($4) per dish, but still reasonable compared to many other destinations.

A reassuring aspect of dining in Vietnam is the honesty in pricing at most local restaurants. Owners typically display clear prices, ensuring that you get good value for your money.

To discover great places to eat, you can rely on Google Reviews or simply look for eateries bustling with locals – a sure sign of good food at good prices. And remember, Vietnamese people are known for their warmth and hospitality towards foreign guests.

5. Navigating Healthcare in Vietnam: A Local’s Advice for Over-60s Travelers

One of the major issues tourists over 60 years old coming to Vietnam need to pay attention to is taking care of their health when necessary!

In Vietnam’s major cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, you’ll find healthcare facilities that meet international standards, complete with English-speaking staff. However, in rural areas, medical services can be more basic.

To locate English-speaking healthcare professionals, I recommend using online resources or seeking advice from local expat communities. It’s wise to keep a list of these facilities with you.

Pharmacies are widespread in our cities, and many (big) pharmacists have enough English proficiency to assist.

If you’re bringing medications from home, make sure they’re permitted in Vietnam and bring a doctor’s prescription for them.

Learn the emergency contact numbers in Vietnam. In serious situations, be aware that medical evacuation might be necessary, and language barriers can sometimes be an issue.

I strongly advise obtaining comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical treatments and evacuation. Some policies also offer medical advice helplines.

6. More Budget-Friendly Travel Tips in Vietnam: A Local’s Guide

Referring to another one of our beloved articles (which I recommend you read), here are some essential tips for a cost-effective and pleasant journey in Vietnam.

  1. Discover peaceful rural retreats in Vietnam: Foreign tourists aged 60+ will find Hue, Quang Binh, Ninh Binh, and Phan Thiet ideal alternatives to bustling Ho Chi Minh City. These locations offer a rich cultural experience, a leisurely pace of life, affordable prices, and an authentic atmosphere.
  2. Smart Shopping: When you’re browsing through tourist spots like Ben Thanh Market in Ho Chi Minh City, remember to ask prices before buying. Actually, locals in Vietnam typically avoid the Ben Thanh market due to its relatively high prices.
  3. Ask the Youngsters: While many older Vietnamese may not speak English, the younger generation often does and is usually happy to help. They can provide information on average prices for goods and meals – just approach them with a friendly and warm smile!
  4. Tipping Know-How: Here’s a little insider tip – tipping isn’t really a thing in Vietnam. While it’s always appreciated, it’s never expected, so you can keep those extra bills for something else!
  5. Explore for Free: Not all tourist spots in Vietnam charge an entry fee. In places like Ninh Binh, beyond the popular (and paid) Trang An, there are many beautiful areas to explore for free, which is why biking or motorbiking is popular among tourists.
  6. Travel Timing: Planning your trip outside of the busy June to July period and away from public holidays can save you loads. It’s quieter, more relaxing, and your wallet will thank you.
  7. Central Vietnam Charm: For an authentic vibe and wallet-friendly experiences, Central Vietnam is the place to be. Phu Yen and Quy Nhon are not just breathtaking but also kind on your budget.
